When I was 16, I wrote a poem about you.
Obviously, I didn’t know you yet,
But the poem was about you.
It was a short one;
Similar to something Emily Dickinson would write.
It reads,
“she vowed to listen to the oceans in his chest and search for the stars in his eyes.”
That’s totally about you.
I listen to the breath
rolling in you chest.
I stare into the galaxies that
Your eyes hold.
I love that you let me.
Loving you is like breathing.
It’s so easy and perfect.
Cosmically designed;
Exactly as it has always been,
And always meant to be.
Just like a comet hurtling
Toward the earth,
You arrived exactly when you were supposed to.
Somehow, I knew at 16
That you were going to be someone
who would change
Everything.
I don’t think I’ll be able to articulate
How much I love you and how
Grateful I am for you.
If we looked for finger prints
on my heart
We would find yours. (Rudy Francisco wrote that. I wish I was that good)
Back when I was 16,
Somehow I knew I would love you
More than I had loved anyone.
And I’m so glad I knew.
