Kaleidoscope Eyes

I started writing poetry at the age of 12
Because I didn’t know how to put into words
The feeling I got when Mike from geometry
Told me I was pretty.
I wrote a haiku that day called “eyes”
I don’t even remember what I wrote down
What he looked like, If I replied.
I just remember the tectonic plates of my heart
Slowly merging to form mountains and oceans,
I was on top of the world.

Do you remember the first time you tried chocolate
You were probably 8 or 9
When you asked your parents for more,
And they said “patience is a virtue”
I’ve lived with that saying for 21 years now
And still,
I find myself coming back to people
Who’ve given me a taste of what if’s and what could be’s
When really I should’ve been spending my time
Patiently searching for a destination
I’ve driven past too many stop signs in the winding roads of life

To Mike from geometry,
If you’re reading this, this is my reply.
One day, when a beautiful broken girl serves herself on a silver platter
Her head laid back to expose her neck
Look at her with those kaleidoscope eyes
And maybe, just maybe,
She’ll step out in grass with her feet bare
And feel warmth for the first time
