Putting a Fire in Your Belly

The supposedly, totally true tale of Porica, second wife of  Marcus Junius Brutus. Yes, that Brutus.

When Faire Porcia
chomped her charcoals
the Romans applauded her piety,
lining her stomach
with a stoked fire
We’ve all done it,
at least once,
but she did it for Brutus
Or because of,
Or in spite of, or to spite
with each bite.
But she probably didn’t
because the flame
would go out, I think
even if she swallowed them whole
so maybe my English teacher
confused myth with martyrdom.
