Mike: Cranfordite

Mike has been a resident of Cranford for over forty years. He asked if I was a high school photography student. I said I graduated a long time ago. I told him I’m an MFA student @mfaphotovideo @svanyc — so still a student. From there, I learned that Mike is brilliant at fixing old cars up and building them practically from scratch. Mike was obviously very passionate about cars. He told me that the 1913 Ford was among the last of the cars with bronze trimming that Henry Ford helped produce in the USA. I also learned about the kerosene headlights —Mike installed an electric turn signal as a safety measure. He said, “nobody knows the hand signs if you use them.” I agreed and told him I was unsure of the hand signals. I knew I had been taught them at one time or another. At the end of our conversation, he asks me about the photos I have taken, and He asks me not to post his portrait. Mike, as he lights his second consecutive cigarette, explains he has cancer and doesn’t have much longer to live. I thank him for his time and willingness to share with me something that he is passionate about. I tell Mike I’ll see him around, and that I hope he takes it easy. #anastasiacaulfieldvisuals
