Leaving Town (Nothing to Declare)

I’ll pack up this life at last.
It all fits nicely -
there’s not enough to strain against the seams.
The lid slips neatly on, and there’s no need
to sit on it to get the zip to close.

I’ll pack up this life at last.
I’m only slightly
sad that I can take it all so lightly.
I’m sure there should be more to it than this -
no goodbyes, just a decision: time to go.

I’ll pack up this life at last
and wrap it tightly -
there’s nothing at all explosive or alive
or likely to cause an unpleasant surprise
should I ever choose to open it again -

so I’ll pack up this life at last
and go out quietly,
and go until I reach the wide grey sea,
underneath the bright grey sky which might be
turning into either sun or rain.
