Flaws

Sometimes I sit there and highlight my ‘flaws’ over and over again. The birthmark on my face that sits bright and rosey, my hirsutism that leaves a constant shadow, the pores that scatter my nose along my freckles, the stray hair I never see on my chest until the glaring light of the bathroom highlights it....

Why do I think they are flaws? Has society conditioned me to think my natural features are less than perfect? Repeat after me: I am human, and unless I photoshop my skin to within an inch of its life, these will appear time and again throughout my life!

My marks, bumps and lumps make me unique, make me HUMAN and to make someone feel less for their skin, their weight, their uniqueness is all on you.

It’s normal to feel self conscious, less than beautiful, less than perfect because of your scars and ‘imperfections’ in this social media dominated culture. But it’s important to recognise that these differences between us is what makes us unique, and I’m glad to have a body that champions me everyday!

And if I cover up my pores, take medication to reduce my hirsutism and get laser on my birthmark, it doesn’t reduce me to someone who is vain, self obsessed or chasing perfection. I do what I do to make me happy- yes, you can champion your differences publicly but also present to the world what you feel comfortable showing- it really does work like that.

In 2021, we are leaving comparative, judgemental energy behind 👋🏻

Just because I feel comfortable showing myself fully, doesn’t mean others are. The main thing I’m trying to get across is that the imperfections society has conditioned to see, to hide and to hate, are normal. You can wear them loud and proud, or cover them- what matters is that you are comfortable in yourself, and feel good doing it ✨
