My name is Sadie Jordan, I'm a 22 year old, London based illustrator and creative. I have just self published my own WOC empowering colouring book entitled; Beauty and the Braid. I created the book as part of my final major project at London college of fashion as a celebration of Afro-Caribbean hairstyles and textures in all their glory. As a woman of colour myself I have often struggled with knowing how to manage my curly hair, however, I fell in love with getting braids! Not only are they a protective style but they also make me feel like the best version of myself.
The book features illustrations of strong, beautiful black women, mandalas I uniquely created by digitally tracing over synthetic hair strands and empowering quotes said by women and other influential figures. I myself often use adult colouring books to de-stress so I wanted my book to enable others the chance to do the same whilst encouraging positive self-reflection. I have been interviewed about the book on talk radio’s ‘badass women’s hour’ and hoe zine and I also have an upcoming feature in Sick love zine. I am hoping to reach a wider audience this coming year and encourage women of colour to embrace and look after their natural hair!
