changing seasons

the world is ever-changing,
yet stays the same in many ways,
or rather, feels the same

with spring comes familiar butterflies
that dance along the grass and perch
on the same lilacs and daisies
to drink the same sweet nectar

but these are not the same butterflies
and bees and beetles and ants
as the year before, nor are they the same
flowers or grass, no they are long gone

when summer comes, we eat
the same watermelon, bright and juicy,
dripping down our arms, under a bright blue sky,
familiarly sweet; the taste of summer

but these watermelons and cherries
are the seeds we spit last july, and
the great great great grandchildren of
the watermelons of our childhood

come fall, it is the same again with
pumpkins and cinnamon and nutmeg
the harvest arrives like it always does,
but the products are one-of-a-kind

the leaves once again take on bright yellows
and oranges and reds. there are more every year
born in spring, making way for new growth again
as they fade to browns and fall away

and in winter, the christmas carols play
you bake cookies and toffee with
the same iterations of ingredients;
the traditions are the same, but you are older

and everyone you see is older too
after rushed christmas shopping, you gather
around a new tree decorated like the old,
to give and receive more new gifts

humans are always recreating
the old from the new
we take comfort in the things
we can recreate or keep the same

but even the dolls will degrade
and their colors will fade
our tastebuds will change,
our bodies and minds will age

with each year that passes,
and as each season repeats,
the world is completely different
than it was before

we only have so much time
everything will change
but so much will stay the same
