i hate being scared

i hate the way i instinctively put my keys between my knuckles as i walk home at night,
i hate the way i look over my shoulder at every second step,
i hate the way i pretend to be on the phone as i sit at the bus stop,
i hate the way my dad tells me to turn on my location so he knows where i am,
i hate the way my mum tells me to wear a longer top,
i hate the way schools have to tell girls not to go anywhere alone,
i hate the way i've learned to walk fast and watch my surroundings.
i hate the way schools teach us to cover up so we don't distract the boys.

i hate the way i have to be careful,
because i know that if i'm not, i'll be kidnapped or raped.

i hate the way schools teach us not to get raped.

why not just teach the boys not to rape us?
