The Earth Held Its Breath

Winds circle and bash the verdant shoreline
picking up debris at will,
Deserted harbour streets funnel rain
into rivers,
Driverless cars jostle for pole position
in a race no one will win.

As winds abated
and water seeped away,
Welcome eyes smiled.

Everything seemed swell,
The gentle rise and fall,
The peaks that lightly crash
upon a landscape of varied blues and greens.

The air at once sat still
like the planet had sucked in its breath,
Held for a moments eternity,
Filling its lungs with salted tears,
A seascape laid bare showing its bounty
as the wall of sound grew,
Hitting notes that would shatter
all that was in its view.
