The vanishing land whales

The vanishing Land Whales

It was once said, that Land Whales ruled the Earth.
Beings of such magnetude, we can only guess.
It was said they came from the sea
Beached upon the land.
They found a way,
Surviving and growing with every year.
Yet always hoping to return  home to the seas.

We honored them as gods
Praying and offering gifts
Singing songs and incantations
Tin return they blessed us with seas of plenty.
They sang, haunting melodies, yearning calls
To return to the seas once more.
Watching always for the return of the Swift’s.

In time we forgot them
We left them to die.
We offered no gifts, no remembrance.
We did not care.
Mankind simply discarded them, forgot, just left, with no goodbye.

The gods are gone, buried deep in the earth, worshiped no more.
We plundered, we robbed, we raped.
Digging deep, with greed we took more.
Rotting flesh of minerals, blood of oil.
Once glittering skis of crystal, now worn with pride
Carcasses of bones, displayed on walls
Fat of Ambergris, intestines of iron and ore.

I wish to go back to the old ways
And see the whales again.
To say I’m sorry.
Sorry mankind is cruel and lost.
In our arrogance we fail to listen, we never listen.
But I know our ancestors live on.
You watch and wait in silence.
I honour you.
Can we start again?

Poet.
