- Patti Astor, interviewing Jean Michel Basquiat at, The Fun Gallery, 1982.

This piece means for anyone to embrace those unknown and unrealized qualities about ourselves while being aware of the cycle of actions that prohibits us from growing. The EBT ( Electronic Benefits Transfer) card, I’ve personally experienced growing up in the inner city of Philadelphia, it gives false hope to the disenfranchised conforming to a system of oppression. Incoherently, in the Art World, as a Black Artist, we are expected to create art about our fear, we are expected to create angry art or a community project that encourages change or it honestly, “has to mean something”. ‘How High Can A Monkey Jump’ - brings about  a solution by encouraging self-reflection and self-love being aware of your Ancestry and the components of the semiotics in Black Culture by jumping and rising higher than the circumstances/exploitation.
