To: Dream

To: Dream is a series of three pieces of curtains together as an installation created by Leung from 2019 to 2021. The theme is the artist’s impressive dreamscape. The word “to” in To: Dream is an adverb and also a preposition.

The concept of To: Dream is about self-integration through understanding the unconscious in dreams. On one hand, dreams are a montage of images and feelings of Leung. The image appears in layers of curtain revealing her unconsciousness. On the other hand, dreams are realistic journeys for Leung. Leung sees dream as a bridge to connect with her father as Leung burnt a letter to her departed father to make visitations in dreams when she was young.

Leung has had no dreams for four years since she started to work. In that period, Leung worked seven days a week. She has one full-time job and two part time jobs a month. Like many working class people, her life is only working for a living. Leung after quitting the jobs and going back to college, she started having dreams that she felt so real and impacted her for days. She saw the dreams as an admonition from her inside. The process of painting and sewing curtains as a way of praying to have more dreams. The action of closing the curtain symbolizes the happen of dreams. It is a celebration and commemoration for the artist. The size of each curtain is 180 cm width and 150 cm height. It is according to the window in Leung’s bedroom.

Leung Shuk Wai was born in Hong Kong. Her art practice is to find peace and self-integration. Her artwork currently is connected by her condition but divided by the experience of culture, personal, and natural. Leung started her art practice when she was twelve years old in Jockey Club Ti-I College. After she graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University with the Associate Degree of Visual Art, Leung became a graphic designer for three years. The work experience made Leung aware that learning new skills for living only is meaningless. Leung spent a year fixing the crackles and a year to adjust the mosaic. These jobs are meaningless and boring. She needs to abandon the aesthetics and art history that she learned before when she was working in Hong Kong. Seeking for peace and care of the self in the fast-paced life is Leung’s body of work. Instagram @lshukwaii
