Commemorating the once-in-a-decade flowering fennel plant

Hello Smple team,

I hope you're all keeping well in these changing times!

I am a portrait photographer who specialises in creating natural and observational stories that affect change. My passion about environmental and social issues help to define the work that I create. Below is a little bio on a small story I shot recently.

After 10 years of waiting, Abi’s fennel plant finally came into flower. Naturally, she was over the moon! To commemorate this once in a decade event, she asked if I wouldn’t mind photographing the plant before its flowers died off. I suggested a set of portraits of her alongside the plant to have as a keepsake. Abi was really keen on the idea, so we agreed on a time when the light would work well for a portrait shoot, and met in her garden. Abi lives right next door, so I didn’t have far to travel – the main thing we had to watch was that we both kept at a safe distance from each other – so we had to dance around each other between locations to make sure we were always at least two meters apart.

Abi is a wonderful human being and a keen horticulturist. She sees a lot of positives coming through this time that the world is on pause, particularly where the natural world is concerned. However as she lives by herself with just her cat for company, so she really misses human contact. Spending this together felt like a really nice opportunity for us to connect and create a lasting memory.

I've attached the selection of images, and would be delighted if you wanted to feature them in Smple. My details are below also:
