And I didn't believe in love at first sight,
Until I laid eyes on you.
I caught you glancing
from across the room.
And I thought the rest would be history
But you were also my first heartbreak too.
Our love didn't last forever, distance played a part.
We no longer sang along to the same tune.
You shifted to a different key,
Without ever telling me.
And then when I came back home, to you,
You’d already moved on to someone new.
And so I thank you for all the good times.
First kisses and wishes and walks in the park,
Hand in hand, arm in arm.
But sometimes I do wish I could change the past
And even though you made me feel worthless,
I would have done anything to make our love last.
But I'm glad I didn't, because maybe ‘firsts’ are just trial runs.
Opportunities to make mistakes and learn and grow,
Like flowers finally learning how to face the sun.
They were never meant to last forever.
But I just hope all my ‘seconds’ are better.
