Reclining in Birdsville

Oil by Thomas Van Horn 2015

Hang down low
All’s OK
Flower fall
Ice crystal castles
A place to be
But the bird who owns this place
Will peck up anything that’s made of meat

A little fellow lies, nonchalant, at the middle bottom of the picture.
He represents us as we live our lives day to day.
Even though we struggle at times, it seems all is well.
We’re fed and entertained and at some level of peace.

But looming above, fairly well hidden yet right up front, is a doom developing.
Something that may change it all, our peace and our freedom.
Our lives.
Like a giant bird sneaking in to peck up a worm.

What can we do?
Even if we run away or fight,
the bird will probably catch us and eat us up.
Well, anyway, we’re just reclining here letting the bird come.

I've been an artist all my life although I've had to maintain a day job to keep myself fed. I've painted with oils all along but I've also worked with collage, ceramics, writing, and photography.
