We all play a role, there is no such thing as neutral. Going into 2023 with a reignited passion to live & contribute to society, felt I should start with this..
Oil paint & mixed media on black canvas (November 2020) Somewhat a self-portrait
I had been sitting on this idea for a while, but because of 2020, after always seeing "there's no such thing as neutral," "silence = complacency," I started actively thinking about what it meant to be active/neutral in this Universe.
Silence, something about silence makes me sick!
'Cause silence can be violent sorta like a slit wrist
Questions to ponder:
- On what side of the growth do we want to be?
- On what side of history do we want to be?
- When we look back, what do want to see?
No matter what, you are a part of this world, a part of this Universe.
Details of materials:
- Black linen canvas
- Oil paint
- Super glue
- Cut-outs from an old Encyclopedia
- Tracing paper, used for the back of the letters as well as the eyes-to-lips images
- Rocks, moss, & soil from a planter that fell that I felt I shouldn't throw out
- Red sewing thread
- Represents/inspired by the Japanese 'Red String of Fate' & Greek/Roman mythology of the 'Thread of Human Fate.'
- This was continual, I didn't cut it the whole way threaded throughout the canvas.
- An artificial terf (fake grass) sample left in front of my door
The flower-looking image on the shoulder is supposed to be the 'Seed of Life' which I felt made sense with this painting, but it's also my actual tattoo
I had originally wanted to make a flower coming out of the head that had the Earth as it's center, but I'm bad at foreshortening lol
Let me know what you think or leave a story/comment about what you learned during 2020 or beyond.
