Joe Murphy - 'Progressive Neo-Soul' Guitarist

BIOGRAPHY

21 years old from Hampshire, Joe Murphy is a Progressive R&B guitarist studying his final year at The Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford at Level 6 for his BA (Hons) in Music Industry Practice; during this time, he has been mentored and worked alongside Paul Geary (Nik Kershaw and Sister Sledge), Brian Henry (Soul II Soul and The Jackson 5) and Giorgio Serci (Yamaha and freelance guitarist). Joe has been featured on the BBC Music Introducing program and also enjoys playing blues, rock, and 1970s funk, aside from producing his own material.

Over the several years he has been involved with music, Joe started to gain production skills using Propellerhead Reason (DAW) starting at secondary school while taking piano and theory lessons, uploading demos and performing in the samba band alongside, then heading to college where he had the chance to collaborate with MOBO nominated, local gospel-rapper, "J Vessel" and produced his first EP entitled "Trading Places", which he uploaded on to his Soundcloud thereafter.

Joe then eventually ended up at university; along the way, he has picked up experience in using Logic Pro X, the ability to collaborate with fellow musicians on the course, and acquiring influences such as Tom Misch, Ed O'Brien (Radiohead), and David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) through his 6-year guitar playing. Joe’s enthusiasm for music revolves around his father who inspired him to play and listen to various genres, primarily 1970s blues and rock.

As well as Logic, Joe has experience with video editing and uses software, primarily Final Cut Pro in order to create Spotify Canvas’, promotions, and release adverts for his own and other social media accounts. Photography is another one of Joe’s advantages, as he uses programs such as Canva and Photoshop to produce track covers before a release.

A bedroom producer, Joe has released a trio of singles in 2021 through major streaming platforms, including Prosperity, his first single release, and Get Out There both of which made it on to BBC Radio Solent's the following year, featuring on the same show with the duo “Wet Leg”; radio host Steph Nieuwenhuys described Prosperity as "Such a lovely track, that helps all of our troubles melt away. It's such a good put your feet up, relax
and everything's going to be OK sort of song."

Other roles soon varied such as performing guitar alongside fellow BBC Introducing R&B artist "L'Rockett". His next project involves working in and out of the Guildford campus on his upcoming album “Tenfold” which showcases his technical, collaboration and self-production skills; one of Joe's upcoming tracks entitled "Daylight" premiered exclusively on Solent and intends to include it on his working album.

Tenfold is scheduled for release Summer 2022.
