In sleeps like these

In sleeps like these my soul may say
He had followed sound reason in slipping away
In sleeps like these, that wane and crack
He had wished me an insomniac

To silence softening on his leave
-So bold to cloak him now and grieve
Not one vile cry from me could cease
The silence softening my release.

He was and had enjoyed a lot
With the beloved I was not
In sleeps like these he sought to guide
And closed his ears each time I sighed

How pretty this must be for you!
The empowered woman prevails anew;
But is it not so that as I slept
It was a human's heart I kept

And loved it none and feared its name
So that my own was blind to blame;
But to you, a friend whom I misread
And near miswrote, I say instead
Should you see (and see beneath) these words
Know you got less than was deserved.
