Growing up in modern Africa is at the very least really confusing. The foreign influence is undeniable and don't get me wrong - it's great, just not that great for our identity. The continent as a whole is divided on the schools of thought that are shared by different people. There are those that revere the western culture; the sophistication and the civilization and there are those that believe this obsession with culture that isn't ours is some form of mental slavery.
The biggest misconception about Africa is that education started with the colonialists. Nothing could be farther from the truth; education existed in the form of folklore and what was introduced is a better way to preserve that knowledge.
Human beings at the very core are learners. Learning is an innate characteristic that has helped us beat the odds and ensure our survival over the ages. The world has changed and we have changed with it. We have designed our lives around adversity and we've pushed the limits to ensure we survive in numbers. Formal education doesn't have to mean that we trash cultural knowledge. Let us not throw out the baby with the bath water
