Empty Conversation

In 2022, the artist spent a month in Brazil. During his time, he came across a small cafe in the midst of the pandemic. Tavis began to recognize more intimately his thought patterns and past traumas, reconciling them through art. This photograph represents the product of that inner dialogue.

'Empty Conversations' is a visual examination of the role of intrusive thoughts inside the artist's mind. The artist, struggling with bipolar disorder, wished to display the duality of his inner conversations set against a background devoid of detail and instead replaced with a large, open canvas of subtle texture and muted color; a nod to the fog of his mind at the time. The artist began to see these inner discussions as cyclical and dangerous; a method of keeping is mind trapped in loops rather than serving as healthy reflection. The photograph positions two sides of the artist (bipolar) in direct opposition, introducing tension into the scene by the positioning of the chairs.
