I want all writing to be like Sir Kazuo Ishiguro’s

I suspect this book will forever live in my thoughts.

The Remains of the Day by Sir Kazuo Ishiguro spans the time between the first and second World War, in England. Mr. J. Stevens' story as a Butler: his memories of running a large, respectable, household in that time as well as his post-war life.

I'm at a loss as to what can be said about this book other than that it'll take you completely by pleasant surprise. A beautiful book, I was reminded a little of more the modern day/contemporary type books: A Man Called Ove and The Rosie Project. It quietly entertains but has a respectful depth and so, offers plenty of material for thought and discussion.

Kazuo Ishiguro writes thoughtfully and in such a delicate, concise manner. It was in my mind even when I wasn't reading, the character of Mr Stevens (oh I do wish he had a more eccentric name!) and his, mannerisms were charming in a not-completely obvious way. I grew quite fond of the way the character of Mr Stevens told a story. He withheld all of his own emotion, unless he was stoic in the memory, but was liberal with every other detail! I also was fond of his admirable ability to recall and recount all these small details. I know some say not everything is significant, but there is much to gain from being told the full story. What is remembered and recounted does, of course, tell us a lot about a person/character as well. There were moments when it could be said he was dismissive or inconsiderate but with access to his thoughts we know it's just his way and he did feel after all. He just didn’t know how to express feelings.

I did predict certain developments long before they played out; but, this did not take away from my enjoyment. I dare say, nothing can prevent you from enjoying this book: it's written with deliberation and tells an ordinary story well. A Favourite Of Mine.
I can be found reading or, trying to find the time... All opinions are my own. I often receive books for 'review consideration'. My opinions remain just as truthful. I am a fan of Goodreads as a blogging platform. I use this platform more for writing conversations about books and thoughts on the subject of literature. I plan to navigate other subjects too. I like to reflect and come back to what I have read or written before. I hope you enjoy my writing and if you feel inclined please leave me a tip. I will be sure to use it to support further writing. For the most part, I enjoy anything fun or, anything that sparks my curiosity. I have very little time for anything else. Interests: Books, TV and films. I like the quiet life.
