The American dream

“Round em up cowboy”
Rein them in, lashes, no guns.
Roll up, Roll up
For the greatest show on earth-
Media clash, fake news, death of the journalist.
Oh how you stole the show-
And a few countries too.
Histories of blood-
Founded by father’s unknown.
Washed hands in streams of tears-
Relish your riches in jars of preserves.

“Pack em in boys”
Remember the old days-
Planes now, not ships.
Mass expulsions, no chains required-
Poste haste, back to black.
I killed a man in Rio-
Not on our doorstep.

“Old Hiati”
Gracious queen of resilience-
Revered by all, a calling card.
Voodou, mystery, Kompa-
Dances with angels and demons.
Feathers and crosses, floods, and tears.
Les etoiles-
The stars mourn and weep.
“American corruption”
2nd class, no class-
Caste out.
Despised because of poverty,
Yet they keep you in poverty.
Cages made of barbed wire-
Stars and stripes of bondage.
I pray to Marie Laveau-
That you stand strong and proud again-
Overlapping in crisis, dignity, and grace.
Chart a course-
Through turbulent seas,
Freedom to choose, new leaders.
To choose life.

Poet.
