Sunflower Seeds

I sit here wallowing
In the darkest darkness
Known to humanity
And the only light
That reaches me
Is you

Happy memories
Of you
Reach through this dark soil
Like a sunflower
In a barren field

Latching onto my tears
Your sunflower’s roots
Grow and intertwine
With every bit
Of this world
You left behind

You are in the air
You are in the soil
You are in the water
You are in everything around me

I see you in every
Purple flower that blooms
In my backyard
But though you had yet
To fully bloom
Your heart was as
If not more
Beautiful than the hydrangea

I hear you singing off-key
When “Alexander Hamilton”
Plays in the car
As I drive aimlessly
Unsure
How to move forward
How to find
Where North points

It was only yesterday
That we sat at Yupdduk
With Clara and Doah
And cried together
Because the spicy rice cake
Was too spicy

It was only yesterday
That I hugged you
Told you “I love you”
Said I’ll “See you later”
And sent you off
To college

Today
I sit here wallowing
In the darkest darkness
Known to humanity
And the only light
That reaches me
Is you

Wishful thoughts
That when I rise tomorrow
It’s not too late

To tell you
That your presence in our lives
Is brighter than even
The drops of sunlight
Scattered across
The Sahara Desert

To remind you
That our love for you
Is greater than
The seven oceans
Of this world

But I know tomorrow will never come
So I will carry you
And our memories
Wherever life takes me
And plant the seeds
Of the beautiful sunflower
You were
And forever will be
In all the soils
I tread upon
