The Garden

There once was a garden that the whole world forgot
It was left just to grow, first to live then to rot
It glowed golden in summer through the leaves of the trees
But the sun never saw what was torn underneath
Under foot, under root, the whole garden was breaking
With each day gone unseen every atom was aching
Through the earth and the water ran away a disease
That cut deeper and faster with each unwitnessed breeze
With such beauty and splendor, every petal alight
The whole garden was waiting for someone to catch sight
Still, the silence continued through winter and spring
With the world unobservant of a beautiful thing
So the rot grew yet stronger and the disease took its hold
Tearing trees from the sky to the darkness below
As the water ran dry and the petals lost life
All the flower heads fell at a new summers light
Took a year and a day for the garden to fall
Every weed, every tree, no matter how tall
Now a scar in the earth is what's left of that life
Not a match to the beauty of a garden of light
But a beauty unseen is a dangerous thing
as it rots from its core just to kill from within
