I remember a few classes ago in my Photo Imagery class, we had talked about when being a photographer we are often "the observer." That being introverted is good since we are observing everything around us. I agree but there should also be a happy medium between being "the observer" and then "the initiator." What taught me this lesson was when during my walk with my mom and saw a women tendering her garden. Her garden was so beautiful and I told her how beautiful it was. She said thank-you and said I could take pictures of it. We left and continued our walk. I was just acting as an observer. Looking at the flowers and her garden, yet I wanted more. I wanted to learn more about her. How long has she been doing this? What's her favorite flower? etc. When I finished my walk with my mom I asked her if we could go by the woman's house again. Now this time, I was "the initiator." I introduced myself to her and asked for her name. Her name was Lily
. She said she had lived in San Diego since the 80s and the house she was working at was not actually her house. She works as a gardener and maintenance this place every Saturday. I wouldn't have known that If I hadn't played the role as "the initiator." I explained to her that I was doing a project on my neighborhood and she gladly let me take a picture of her. Before I left she left me with kind words. She told me to keep being a scholar and keep up my good grades, they will pay off.
