CONSUM(HER) - Veronica Murphy

Hello! My name is Veronica Murphy, an artist wearing many hats. A video piece that is near and dear to my heart is CONSUM(HER), I will include the link to it on my website here. I am also including the summary of the piece below! Thanks so much.

SUMMARY:

There is strong continuity in this narrative of the mediocrity that is woman, as well as the appraisal of heteronormative and patriarchal social status quo.

CONSUM(HER) is a glance-worthy consideration of how advertisers have negatively marketed to and historically projected upon women. Whether it be cosmetics, moisturizers, soaps or coffee— the industry has regularly found a profitable demographic in inferiority and insecurity. Pairing the vapid visualization provided by the advertising bracket with television scrambles mirrors an emotional response to the absurdity.

The prevalence of this negative gaze in modern advertising campaigns is still inescapable, though admittedly subtler than its predecessors. This marginalization and denotation of women being gentile, home-making, quiet, and most commonly white creates problematic dialogue. The placement of ‘imperfect’ women in societal peripherals furthers our struggle with progression and acceptance, even in twenty-nineteen.

The need for more complicated, accurate and fair representation in the media for all women of all walks of life is exclaimed through Sylvia Rivera’s famous “ya’ll better quiet down!” as the ultimate punctuation in the picture of woman. We are consumers, not be to consumed anymore.
