When the world ends, who will keep you company? Indie pop artist Wu Am I celebrates ride-or-die friendships on “to the last of a dying breed,” an alternative rock-pop song created in his bedroom studio with some help from his close friends, who remotely recorded background vocals and guitar. The song weaves dreamy guitars, poignant vignettes, and chanty hooks into an explosive rock anthem meant for a ‘90s coming-of-age film.

The animated music video was produced by Loud Bird Productions and directed by former Pixar animator Trilina Mai, whose independent film Push won at the Los Angeles Animation Festival for Best Student Animation. Set in his hometown of San Francisco, the nostalgic film follows 4 young friends who grow apart before reuniting as adults in one last hurrah during a fiery asteroid apocalypse. Wu published a series of cryptic tweets and satirical doomsday news articles to reveal the music video’s backstory, serving both as a marketing campaign and social commentary on the zeitgeist of the 2020s.

Wu picked up singing, piano, and guitar before learning to produce and songwrite after receiving a MIDI keyboard as a birthday gift. With contemporary influences like Arcade Fire, The 1975, and Lorde, Wu conjures captivating pop melodies with rock, R&B, and electronic influences. His previous single “i love when it rains in LA” is an upbeat ‘90s R&B-influenced track that has received over 100k streams and landed features on Spotify’s Cosmic Playlists and Race Chaser, a podcast hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Alaska and Willam.

Wu Am I is working on his full-length debut The Cinematic Wuniverse, scheduled for summer 2021.
