This was a memorable adventure. I was inspired by Ren Hang to create an environment where my friend could be vulnerable. I wanted a surreal, intimate photograph of a friend that depicted our thoughts and feelings during 2020: bleak, dreary, and desolate. This particular park is a barren bird sanctuary just outside a very populated city in Canada.
The sun was setting, time was not on our side, and mosquitos were attacking with a vengeance. I had never used an external flash on a medium-format film camera, so tonight was going to be a first. My friend was very patient with me as I tried to use the flash and the photographs turned out to be some of my best work.
