The First Relationship

I feel like I might have missed out on something,
Because I didn't have a first kiss in a cinema car park,
With the bumping of faces and grating of braces.
It just never quite happened like that.

And I didn't have a naïve first holding of hands,
Where neither party knew the appropriate time to let go,
Leading to both holding on for really, truly, uncomfortably too long.
It just never quite happened like that.

And I didn't get asked out for the first time through a friend of a friend,
who had scribbled "will you go out with me?" on a post it note
Instead, I was always the one watching the message get passed on.
Wishing it would happen to me like that.

I don't think anyone liked me enough to pick me for their first relationship,
their trial run to figure everything out.
So instead I learnt about love through movie scenes and poetry,
And the stories my friends would tell me,
About their firsts,
Whilst I was just patiently waiting for mine.
